Easing the Discomforts of Pregnancy

Making a human is hard work!  Nine months of pregnancy can seem like a long time – especially if you are experiencing physical discomfort and pain. For the body, it is a relatively short period for the vast hormonal and structural changes that occur during this time. Pregnancy Massage can offer relief to the many aches and pains associated with these changes.

A 30% - 50% increase in blood volume and other body fluids can result in a variety of discomforts including lymphedema and pregnancy induced carpal tunnel symptoms. During pregnancy our circulatory and lymphatic systems become rather sluggish, causing a myriad of symptoms and discomforts. Staying well hydrated and regularly engaging in passive aerobic activities like walking and swimming are your best defense in the prevention of lymphedema swollen hands and feet. Light, lymphatic drainage, massage is very beneficial in relieving this issue and regular massage can reduce recurrence.

As your body changes - heavy breasts and an extended belly pull the body forward. The natural response to this is to lean back to compensate for the weight on the front of the body. This creates a strain to the mid and low back; as we extend our head forward to see over the belly we often experience pain in the neck and shoulders. As the baby grows, ribs are pushed up, organs are crowded; a variety of pains can result.

In the third trimester as the hips begin to move, widening in preparation for childbearing, the piriformis muscle  is pulled tight often resulting in hip, leg and sciatic nerve pain.

Therapeutic Massage

Do you live in Silicon Valley? Are you dealing with constant stress or a poor ergonomic work station? Do you suffer from chronic pain?  Are you recovering from injury, surgery or illness? Therapeutic massage can help you feel better, heal faster, improve your sleep, mood and energy level.

A therapeutic massage session may include a blend of techniques including: Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Friction, Neuromuscular Therapy, Myofascial Release, Petrissage, Tapotement, Trigger Point Therapy, Hot Stone Massage, Acupressure, Reflexology, Shiatsu, Facilitated Stretching, CranioSacral Therapy, Reiki and more. Communication plays an important part in a therapeutic massage session. Instead of working mostly in silence(as in your basic relaxation massage); your practitioner will be periodically checking in with you, asking questions about levels of pain. Your therapist may ask about referred pain, range of motion issues, and other questions that pertain to the current status of your body.

A therapist's hands can feel tension, adhesions and scar tissue in a muscle or tightness in connective tissue; but only the client can "feel" whether there is pain.Communication between client and therapist is imperative for optimal results and healing. Let your practitioner know when you feel pain or tightness; you may also let her know if something feels really good. The therapist does not heal you, but rather helps your body heal itself by helping to open energetic pathways, breaking up scar tissue and increasing circulation to problem areas.

Will this session be relaxing?  Absolutely!  Your session will consist of a blend of therapeutic and soothing relaxation techniques.  Remember, this is YOUR session.  If you are feeling exhausted and just want to “zone out” - just say so!  Only you know how your body feels. Help your practitioner provide you with the care you need by openly communicating your expectations, your needs and concerns.
